Never Buy Anything New: A Guide to 400 Secondhand, Thrift, and Consignment Stories in the Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Heyday Books (October, 1992)
Authors: Charlene Akers and Nate Levine
Average review score:

Who Doesn't Like A Bargain?
This book sits in my car's center console because it offers a thorough listing of the many thrift, antique and consignment shops in the California Bay Area.

For those of us who enjoy this type of shopping/spending - this guide makes it possible to locate the often hard-to-find secret stores in unfamilar towns (or perhaps right under your nose?!).

Akers divides the book by counties, and within each county she notes the name of each shop, their address and phone number, plus information regarding any organization affiliation (such as salvation army.)

Underneath each shop heading is a comprehensive account of what the store specializes in - prices you can expect - and specials or events to watch for...
In other words, if you are looking for furniture while driving past Hayward - you might want to check out the thrift store on Suchandsuch St.

Your second-hand shopping will never be the same with so much out there to explore.

Never Without Consent: James Bay Crees' Stand Against Forcible Inclusion into an Independent Quebec
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (January, 1998)
Author: Grand Council of the Crees

Understanding the Cree Love of the Land
I read this book for a Quebec Society course I have been taking at University. It has helped me understand the trials that the Canadian and Quebec governments have put the Cree people through for political and land gain. Let's not forget the economic gains that the Quebec government has made by using the James Bay Hydro electricity project for their own gain. The Cree are very eloquent in explaining thoroughly the political implications of the Quebec separatist government and their attempts to secede from Canada. It has helped me to put this subject into a better perspective. The Cree will not stand by and watch as their land is purportedly to be yanked away once again. Historically it has happened, but that is where the title of the book comes from "Never Without Consent" they have done their homework and after reading this well constructed book the government will not be able to displace the Cree. Thank you to the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Astchee) and the ECW Press.

A must for read-aloud!
The rhyming words are just right, not trite. Young learners adore pointing out the rhymes as well as counting the number of flying squirrels, eyes, etc.

The North Bay Narrative
Published in Paperback by Peter Randall Publisher (01 January, 1999)

Life was so difficult a 100 years ago in Newfoundland.
I picked up this book not knowing anything about Newfoundland, or the life people led a hundred years ago especially ship builders. I found myself unable to put it down as I read how they endured the hardships, raised families and nothing seemed to stop them. It inspired me to realize that we came from such strength and how the human spirit carries us through life. We may have it easy by comparison but this book amazed me and reminded me that we also have that potential within us too. At least I'd like to think so. It is inspirational and educational.

One God or Many?: Concepts of Divinity in the Ancient World (Transactions of the Casco Bay Assyriological Institute, 1)
Published in Paperback by Capital Decisions Ltd (October, 2000)
Author: Barbara N. Porter

One God or Many? is Not About Canaanite Religion!
As the editor and one of the contributors to this volume, I wanted to make it clear that the book is not about Canaanite religion! One God or Many? is the result of a conference that explored the religions of ancient Assyria, Egypt, Greece, and Israel, focusing on their ideas of the divine as one, many, or simultaneously singular and plural. The five essays, written by J. Baines, S. Parpola, S.A. Geller, H.S. Versnel, and B.N. Porter, address topics such as the advantages and disadvantages of monotheism and polytheism, how "god" or "the gods" were imagined in each of these ancient societies, and the usefulness of various concepts of god in developing models of the cosmos and its workings, adapting to social change, or coping with illness and suffering.

Operation Puma: The Air Battle of the Bay of Pigs
Published in Paperback by Edward B Ferrer (June, 1982)
Author: Edward B. Ferrer
Average review score:

Inspirational, informative and entertaining!
Operation Puma details pilot Eddy Ferrer's experience with the Liberation Air Force from the jungles of Guatemala and Nicaragua to the skies over the Bay of Pigs. It is an incredible story of the Cuban pilots dedication to freeing Cuba from Castro's communism. You'll learn why the pilots of the Brigade felt compelled to devote their hard efforts, and some even their lives, to the cause of freedom. It is both filled with funny stories of pilot's in training with American instructors as well as heartbreaking battle drama as some of the pilots fall victim to combat. You'll also see how the CIA fits into the picture of the Bay of Pigs that is little known. I highly recommend this rare glimpse into the Air Battle of the Bay of Pigs!

Original Corvette: 1968-1982 (Bay View Original Series)
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (November, 2001)
Authors: Tom Falconer, James Mann, and Thomas Falconer
Average review score:

Great Reference Book-Tons Of Pictures
I found this book as well as Falconer's other corvette reference books well stocked with great looking original corvettes. You don't just get pictures though. He accompanies the photos with lots of information and data associated with each production year. What I like most of all is it appears most of the corvettes are tagged and street driven, not pampered show cars. I will keep this book around for a long time.

Strap on your blades, tie your shoes or zip up your wet suit and skate, run or swim to the nearest bookstore to pick up a copy of this gem. It'll take years off your life and may even get you laid.
